Josiah Miller came later and examined the stove setup. He had to admit that the smoke draft was excellent, which annoyed him almost as much as the comfort of the room. Thaddius Boon checked the stone and found no evidence of the feared frost damage. Silas Vance looked for mold and found none. Not one of them said sorry.
Men rarely do.
But the camp had begun to understand.

Whitfield, on duty again, was caught in another cold ride.
This time it was not his horse that failed first — it was the road itself. Ice had coated the slope above the claim. He took a bad step, nearly lost his footing, and realized in an instant that if he continued on in that storm he would not make it back to camp safely.
He looked up through the blowing snow and saw the dark mouth of the granite cleft.
Again.
The same shelter.
The same impossible house.
He reached the door with numb fingers and went inside.
And once again the world changed.
The cabin was warm, steady, and alive with human comfort. Melissa had flour on her hands. The children were reading by lamplight. Vauashin was stirring the stove with the same calm concentration as before. The granite wall held the day’s heat like a secret.
Whitfield removed his gloves and stood there in silence, realizing that the thing he had once thought ridiculous had now saved him twice.
But this time, his reaction was different.
He did not merely admire it.
He understood it.
He understood that the genius of the cabin was not only in the stone, nor only in the frame, nor only in the heat retained by mass. He looked at Vauashin.

Vauashin gave the smallest shrug, as though this had never been the point.

Whitfield smiled despite himself.

“How many more of these could be built?”
Vauashin did not answer immediately. He looked at the granite wall, the stove, the children, and the dark opening of the crevice beyond the door. Then he said, almost casually:
