“Shut up!” Arthur roared, a sound of sheer, unadulterated terror.
Part I: The Fall of an Empire
“Shut up!” Arthur roared, a sound of sheer, unadulterated terror. He practically threw himself into the aisle, falling to his knees in front of the stranger. “Please… Mr. Sterling, Alexander… my son didn’t know. We didn’t know!”
Alexander Sterling. The ghost of Wall Street. The reclusive trillionaire whose family owned the sovereign debt of entire nations, the man who could wipe the Montgomery empire off the face of the earth with a single text message.
Alexander didn’t even look down at the older man groveling at his feet. He stepped right past him, stopping directly in front of Chloe.
The man who had just humiliated her—Julian—stood completely frozen, his breath catching in his throat as the reality of his utter destruction began to dawn on him. The smug smirk that had been plastered on his face just moments ago had vanished, replaced by a sickly, pale hollow. His hands trembled at his sides, the champagne flute he was holding shattering against the marble floor as his grip failed.
Arthur grabbed at the hem of Alexander’s tailored coat, his voice cracking with desperation. “We will apologize publicly! We will give her everything! Just please, don’t destroy the company. Three generations, Mr. Sterling…”
Alexander still didn’t look back. With a subtle flick of his wrist, two towering security guards stepped forward from the shadows of the entrance, silently pulling Arthur away and pinning him to the ground, forcing the proud billionaire to watch his dynasty crumble in silence.
Part II: The Ghost Becomes Real
Alexander knelt down on the cold marble, completely unbothered by the dirt or the drama. He reached out with a gloved hand, gently lifting Chloe’s chin.
Up close, the aura of power radiating from him was suffocating, yet his touch was remarkably gentle. His dark eyes, rumored to be entirely devoid of human emotion, searched Chloe’s tear-stained face. He took a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and softly dabbed a stray tear from her cheek.
“I apologize for being late, my lady,” Alexander murmured, his voice a deep, velvety baritone that carried perfectly across the dead-silent ballroom. “The traffic in the upper districts was uncooperative. I see these… vermin… have forgotten their place in my absence.”
Chloe blinked, her heart hammering against her ribs. She had expected to be thrown out of the gala, to be mocked and ruined by Julian’s cruel betrayal. Instead, the most powerful man on the planet was kneeling before her like a loyal knight.
“You… you know who I am?” Chloe whispered, her voice trembling.
“The whole world will know who you are by tomorrow morning,” Alexander replied, a faint, razor-sharp smile touching his lips.
Part III: The Sentence
Alexander stood up, smooth and effortless, turning his gaze to Julian for the very first time. The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Julian flinched, instinctively taking a step back, but there was nowhere to run. The exit was blocked by Sterling’s men.
“Julian Montgomery,” Alexander said, his tone entirely conversational, which only made it more terrifying. “You fancied yourself a king today, mocking a woman who has more honor in her little finger than your entire bloodline possesses. You thought she was defenseless.”
“Mr. Sterling, I—I was joking! It was a misunderstanding!” Julian stammered, sweat pouring down his face, ruining his expensive tuxedo. “Chloe and I, we have history, we—”
“You have history. You do not have a future,” Alexander cut him off coldly. He pulled out a sleek, custom smartphone, his fingers gliding over the screen for a mere three seconds.
Chime. Chime. Chime.
Suddenly, every phone in the ballroom belonging to the Montgomery board members and investors began to vibrate violently. Panic erupted instantly.
“My god,” one investor gasped, staring at his screen. “The banks just called in our loans. All of them. Effective immediately.” “The short sellers… our stock is plunging! We’ve lost forty percent in thirty seconds!” another screamed. “We’re bankrupt,” Arthur whispered from the floor, his eyes hollowed out as he stared at his phone. “It’s over.”
Part IV: A New Dawn
Julian looked from his father to the chaotic sea of panicked elites, and finally back to Alexander. He sank to his knees, the weight of his new reality crushing him. In less than a minute, he had gone from the city’s most eligible, arrogant billionaire bachelor to the broke, blacklisted son of a ruined man. No one in the high-society circle would ever look at him, let alone speak to him, again.
Alexander ignored the weeping Montgomerys, offering his arm to Chloe.
“Your carriage is waiting outside, Chloe,” Alexander said, his demeanor instantly softening as he looked down at her. “Let us leave this circus behind. You have a global empire to inherit, and we have a lot of lost time to make up for.”
Chloe looked back one last time at the ruined men who had tried to break her spirit. Then, she placed her hand firmly in Alexander’s arm, holding her head high as he led her out of the ballroom, leaving the ashes of the Montgomery empire behind them.
