Vasili led Branson back through the inner door, into the second gap, where the air felt noticeably warmer. “This gap holds still air at 23 degrees,” he explained. “No frost on either wall surface, just dead air sitting motionless between sealed shells.”

Through the middle door, they entered the first gap, where the temperature dipped to minus four degrees. Frost adorned the outer shell’s interior surface, but the middle shell remained clear. The temperature differential was doing its work in layers, and Branson began to see the brilliance of Vasili’s design.

“67 below outside,” Branson murmured, realizing the implications of what he was witnessing. “Minus four in the first gap, 23 above in the second gap, and 54 in the living space. Each layer warming the next, each layer protecting the next.”
